Your confidence and trust in hypnotherapy is important to your success. So, on this page we explain very simply what hypnosis is (and equally important, what hypnosis is not), and how hypnosis can help you quit smoking. There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about hypnotherapy which we will dispel here.
You're probably aware of two types of hypnosis. The most commonly seen is 'stage hypnosis' (used for entertainment purposes) which you might have seen on TV. This type of hypnosis is responsible for many of our misconceptions and unfounded fears. The other type of hypnosis is used for therapeutic purposes – this is the type that we use.
Put really simply, hypnosis is relaxation. You might hear lots of other words for it such as 'relaxation state' or 'trance', but the bottom line is that hypnosis allows you to become very relaxed (a little like when you daydream) – and we'll explain why this is important in just a moment. First we'll tell you a few facts about hypnosis:
By now you're probably excited to find out how it works, so we'll tell you – there's no magic or secret, but it is very, very effective.
Hypnosis is very good at helping you achieve anything that you really want to achieve. For example, you want to quit smoking and hypnosis can help you achieve this. The reason we mention it here is because you'll have probably seen stage hypnosis (for entertainment) where members of the audience perform silly acts on stage. The truth is... they want to do that. Really!!! The hypnotherapist is very skilled at picking the most extroverted members of the audience through a series of tests. If you want to stop smoking forever, through hypnosis we can help you to do it. It all works the same way – by something called 'post-hypnotic suggestion'. Examples of post-hypnotic suggestion are 'act silly' (on stage), or 'stop smoking' (therapeutic).
You will have heard of the 'conscious mind' and the 'subconscious mind'. Your conscious mind is your rational side, the side which tells you that you want to quit smoking, it's bad for your health and costs a small fortune. Your subconscious mind is the part of you which says “but I need it!”. Your subconscious mind holds all your fears and ultimately wins out – which is why, until now, you've not been successful in your efforts. Your conscious and subconscious minds were opposing each other. It is perfectly natural and not your fault.
When you're hypnotised and in a relaxed state, your conscious mind quietens down and you can access your subconscious mind. The hypnotherapist will then give your subconscious mind 'positive suggestion'. This helps your subconscious mind start to support your conscious mind in your decision to quit smoking. The post-hypnotic suggestion is there so it continues working even when you're not hypnotised.
It almost sounds too easy, but it is very, very effective. Where everything else you've tried has failed, hypnosis can work. Click here to answer two easy questions and confirm that hypnosis can work for you.
